SailadayOK - Life Changing Therapy At Sea

The need that SOK aims to meet is to enable access to a highly effective, evidence-based, challenging marine adventure therapy to people recovering from addictions, abuse and other trauma; and to support these often excluded clients’ inclusion back into the community. SOK uses sailing in a way that does not require physical fitness; many participants who have impaired physical health or disabilities which could exclude them from taking part in other challenging outdoor activities can fully participate in SOK sessions. SOK is therefore a highly accessible type of intervention.

  • We value the ancient tradition of working with nature and creating an empathic relationship with the environment in order to promote a holistic, transformative, experience.
  • We value the reciprocal relationship between the client, therapist and nature
  • We value our ability to attune to the individual and group needs.
  • We value our clients as whole beings, we aim to enhance their WellBeing, and this is an inclusive term for physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social/cultural health.
  • Our primary position is ‘I’m OK. You’re OK’.
  • We value the client’s natural ability to heal their trauma, beyond simply managing symptoms; and build resilience.

We have 10 years of expertise in working with

  • Clients recovering from addictions, abuse and other trauma.
  • Adults, young people, families and couples; male and female groups, affected others and veterans.
  • ‘Returnees’ mentoring programs to support our clients’ re-integration into the community.

Why we are unique

  • Residential psychotherapeutic groups at sea for 4 days and nights.
  • Process of experiential learning through creative sailing activities, therapeutic process time and exercises incorporating meditation, mindfulness and Tai Chi.
  • Our program is client led and tailored and to meet individual needs as well as the referral agency requirements.
  • We have a broad reaching evidence-based programme, informed by evaluations from clients and referral agencies.
  • Our clinical interventions are consistently founded upon the most up to date research findings in a variety of relevant science and therapy disciplines.
  • Our primary therapist and founder received a Queen’s award, The British Empire Medal, for services to marine adventure therapy and addiction services south west of UK.
  • Historically our primary therapist has experienced many of the same difficulties as our clients and by sharing elements of his own recovery he helps to quickly create a trusting and positive relationship.
  • To educate therapists and skippers in the benefits of therapeutic sailing and marine-based adventure therapy.
